Updating my Contents Page with Codes and Conventions

I made my own contents page, but I decided that it didn't really look like a real magazine, so I looked at an example of Q magazine's contents page and adapted my draft to make it appear more professional.

The Original Contents Draft

What I Did

I wanted my final contents page to be a mixture of my original design and one similar to Q's contents page. I adapted my original design mostly from the second page of Q's contents- I wanted my design to still be one page rather than two.

This is how my later design is different from my original one:
  • It has a clearer layout so is easier to read and navigate information for individual wants.
  • Page numbers easily accessible and columns clearly laid out- easy access to information required.
  • Description of features are worded more simply so is easier to read- more likely to entice and inform the reader (uses and grats).
  • Uses a brighter red- colour stands out and continues house colour scheme.
  • Used a "V" to represent the magazine title "VINYL"- allows room for more space so the layout is not too cluttered and more aesthetically pleasing.
  • Text in different fonts and capital letters- stands out and captivates attention- entices the reader (uses and grats).

How I Light My Images/Photography Set-Up

As I do not have access to a photography studio, I had to set up an area in my house in order to replicate one so that my photographs look more professional. I used black or white cloth as backdrops, directly opposite a window which brought in natural light. I took some of my photographs at around ten/eleven o'clock with the natural light, and some later on with an artificial light (a lamp or soft box/beauty dish)n coming in from behind and to the left.

I didn't have access to any reflectors, I used plain paper to reflect the light. I got the model to hold white paper underneath her at waist level to reflect the light onto her face, and used black paper on either side of her face to create shadows and harsher lines on the model's face.

I got this idea of using reflectors a these angles from a photographer called Richard Avedon, but I replaced these reflectors with paper.

The light on his face is central, and there are shadows on either side of his face- I used black paper to attempt to replicate these shadows and white paper to reflect light onto the model's face.

Using Codes and Conventions in Construction

I have completed many drafts of my constructions, but to make them look more professional, I have looked into even more codes and conventions of the magazine styles that I would like to replicate. This means that I can make my drafts look more similar to real-life magazines.

In addition, I can also use this information to go against any conventions, so that my designs are more individual and don't conform to the norm- this way they will stand out.

Note: my double page spread is the opening two pages of a longer article and what would follow would probably include two or three more pages.
