Updating my Contents Page with Codes and Conventions

I made my own contents page, but I decided that it didn't really look like a real magazine, so I looked at an example of Q magazine's contents page and adapted my draft to make it appear more professional.

The Original Contents Draft

My Contents Page- a later draft

What I Did

I wanted my final contents page to be a mixture of my original design and one similar to Q's contents page. I adapted my original design mostly from the second page of Q's contents- I wanted my design to still be one page rather than two.

This is how my later design is different from my original one:
  • It has a clearer layout so is easier to read and navigate information for individual wants.
  • Page numbers easily accessible and columns clearly laid out- easy access to information required.
  • Description of features are worded more simply so is easier to read- more likely to entice and inform the reader (uses and grats).
  • Uses a brighter red- colour stands out and continues house colour scheme.
  • Used a "V" to represent the magazine title "VINYL"- allows room for more space so the layout is not too cluttered and more aesthetically pleasing.
  • Text in different fonts and capital letters- stands out and captivates attention- entices the reader (uses and grats).

How I Light My Images/Photography Set-Up

As I do not have access to a photography studio, I had to set up an area in my house in order to replicate one so that my photographs look more professional. I used black or white cloth as backdrops, directly opposite a window which brought in natural light. I took some of my photographs at around ten/eleven o'clock with the natural light, and some later on with an artificial light (a lamp or soft box/beauty dish)n coming in from behind and to the left.

I didn't have access to any reflectors, I used plain paper to reflect the light. I got the model to hold white paper underneath her at waist level to reflect the light onto her face, and used black paper on either side of her face to create shadows and harsher lines on the model's face.

I got this idea of using reflectors a these angles from a photographer called Richard Avedon, but I replaced these reflectors with paper.

The light on his face is central, and there are shadows on either side of his face- I used black paper to attempt to replicate these shadows and white paper to reflect light onto the model's face.

Using Codes and Conventions in Construction

I have completed many drafts of my constructions, but to make them look more professional, I have looked into even more codes and conventions of the magazine styles that I would like to replicate. This means that I can make my drafts look more similar to real-life magazines.

In addition, I can also use this information to go against any conventions, so that my designs are more individual and don't conform to the norm- this way they will stand out.

Note: my double page spread is the opening two pages of a longer article and what would follow would probably include two or three more pages.

Vinyl Inspired Photography

As I have changed the title of my magazine to 'VINYL', I wanted to investigate this theme of old records as it goes with the indie genre of the magazine.

I have taken the following pictures of a local vinyl record shop called 'Cliff'. I can include these in my contents page so that the photographs are not all portraits.

Masthead Change and Photoshop Tutorial

  • The title "STAGE" for my magazine represents performing. However, as none of the content of my magazine had to do with live musical performing, I decided to change the title of my magazine.
  • I decided to call my magazine either "VINYL" or "VIRAL". I consulted my focus group and 83% preferred the name "VINYL".
  • I also had to change the design of my mock-up so that the text comes behind the head of the artist (the mock-up picture I used didn't have enough space above the model's head for me to do this).
  • For me to do this I had to look up the following tutorial:

Information for the Article/Interview

In order to write the article feature in my double page spread, I interviewed Mel about her musical interests. Here are the following facts about her as an artist below:

  • Musical interest started for her when Mel was young. She got inspired from going to see musicals. This then lead to performing in school plays with her twin sister Lucy.
  • She was brought up in a family where they encouraged music, drama, art and creativity.
  • Mel started guitar lessons when she was thirteen (at the same time her twin sister Lucy started piano lessons). She felt like the competitive aspect made them both better as artists.
  • Mel is currently writing her own musical, as well as screenplays and short films.
  • She started uploading YouTube videos of her singing regularly about a year ago, although there are some videos on other channels from when she was thirteen with her sister Lucy.
  • Her first gig was at Ramsgate Music Halls.
  • She taught herself ukulele.
  • 'Mel' is short for Melodie-"I was named after music and that's what I love."
  • Wrote a song called "Ghost"- about a break-up.

Photography Experimenting with Props

I wanted to take more pictures with this model for my contents and double page spread. I wanted to explore music through the photography, so have used some props for different looks.

To conform to the music theme of my magazine, I wanted to experiment with photography with some headphones.

Headshot style with different filters for different effects.
More vintage-looking filter to conform to an indie style.
More fashion inspired.
Using props to experiment with artist's personal interests-headphones for music, lipstick for beauty. Red colour scheme continued.

Using flowers for a more innocent "indie" look- this contrasts with the "rockchic" look. Different accessories for a more quirky effect often seen in indie magazines (known to stand out from the crowd).
